China Blames U.S. for Fentanyl Crisis
According to state-affiliated media sources, this stance was reaffirmed by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian, who also criticized the U.S. for imposing trade tariffs on Chinese goods under the "pretext of the fentanyl issue."
Lin emphasized that "as for fentanyl, China has stated multiple times that fentanyl is the US’ problem, not China’s. The responsibility to solve it lies with the US itself."
He further asserted that, in spite of Beijing’s constructive efforts, the U.S. has responded with punitive trade measures that have disrupted cooperation in anti-drug efforts and negatively affected China's lawful interests.
The spokesperson also urged Washington to cease its accusations and avoid placing blame on China.
"If the US is truly sincere about working with China, it should stop smearing and shifting blame onto China. Dialogue must be based on mutual respect, equality, and reciprocity,” Lin stated, outlining the conditions for meaningful diplomatic engagement.
This diplomatic friction followed remarks from U.S. Leader Donald Trump on Monday, in which he announced that China had purportedly agreed to halt the export of fentanyl to the U.S.
Trump has repeatedly pointed fingers at China, alongside Canada and Mexico, as being primary sources of fentanyl entering American borders.
Citing the influx of narcotics—especially fentanyl—Trump had implemented a 20 percent tariff on Chinese products.
The administration stated these tariffs would remain until the implicated nations “cooperate fully” in joint efforts to combat narcotics trafficking.
