Pentagon plans on positioning US Marines to California

(MENAFN) The Pentagon is deploying about 700 active-duty Marines from the 1st Marine Division to assist in controlling riots in Los Angeles triggered by arrests of suspected illegal immigrants. These Marines will help protect federal personnel and property in the area, according to US Northern Command.

The Marines will join National Guard forces, which are expected to increase to 2,000 troops by Wednesday. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth emphasized the federal obligation to protect law enforcement, criticizing California Governor Gavin Newsom for not supporting these efforts. The Pentagon also announced plans to call up an additional 2,000 National Guard members to aid immigration agents and police.

Governor Newsom condemned the deployment of Marines on American soil, calling it “un-American” and accusing President Donald Trump of acting like a dictator. Newsom had previously urged Trump to withdraw the National Guard, labeling the deployment illegal and inflammatory.

The unrest began after immigration officials arrested over 40 people suspected of using false employment documents at a Home Depot and a clothing manufacturer. Protests against Trump’s immigration policies escalated into looting and violent clashes with police, who responded with pepper balls and rubber bullets. Over the weekend, at least 56 arrests were made.

Trump condemned the rioters as “insurrectionists” and promised a tougher crackdown on law enforcement opponents. His administration has intensified efforts to increase immigration arrests, with officials recently raising the daily arrest target from 1,000 to 3,000.
