Meta Intensifies Pursuit of "Superintelligence"

Unhappy with Meta’s current trajectory in the AI field, Zuckerberg has taken personal steps to accelerate progress toward artificial general intelligence (AGI), which refers to systems capable of performing a broad spectrum of human-like tasks.
According to a news agency, he hosted several AI scientists at his residences in Lake Tahoe and Palo Alto as part of this mission to close the gap between human and machine intelligence.
The report notes that Zuckerberg is giving high priority to assembling this covert "superintelligence" unit, aiming for Meta to surpass rival tech giants in the competitive AGI landscape.
His vision includes Meta taking a leading role in this transformative technology.
Zuckerberg is reportedly taking a hands-on approach, planning to hire around 50 individuals for this specialized group, including a director of AI research.
He has also restructured the workspace at Meta’s Menlo Park headquarters to position the team in closer proximity to his own office, signaling his direct involvement in the project.
In addition to forming a new internal team, Zuckerberg is preparing for a massive financial commitment to Scale AI—a firm focused on data infrastructure and bespoke AI solutions.
This multibillion-dollar deal is expected to be Meta's most significant external investment thus far.
Once the agreement is completed, Alexandr Wang, the founder of Scale AI, is anticipated to become part of the superintelligence initiative, further enhancing Meta's capabilities in this arena.
As part of its broader AI efforts, Meta has also introduced a standalone AI application driven by its Llama 4 model.
This new tool is being marketed as a budget-friendly competitor to other major players like ChatGPT, DeepSeek, and Gemini, despite experiencing some early challenges.
