Kremlin confirms Putin caution following Ukrainian drone attacks
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov verified on Thursday that Putin did inform Trump about planned retaliatory actions. However, Peskov declined to provide details, saying the response would occur “when and how our military deems appropriate.”
Ukraine carried out a series of drone strikes on Sunday, targeting Russian airbases from Murmansk in the Arctic to Irkutsk in Siberia. Ukrainian officials claimed the attacks damaged or destroyed around 40 Russian military aircraft, including strategic bombers like the Tu-95 and Tu-22. Moscow acknowledged the damage but stated the aircraft would be repaired.
Additionally, Ukraine allegedly sabotaged railways over the weekend in Russia’s Bryansk and Kursk regions, resulting in at least seven deaths and over 110 injuries. Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) reported another incident in Voronezh Region, where an explosive detonated just ahead of an oncoming train. Thanks to quick action by the train crew, a major disaster was averted.
Putin has condemned the railway attacks as “terrorist acts” carried out by what he called Ukraine’s “illegitimate regime,” claiming it is becoming “a terrorist organization.”
In the aftermath of the Trump-Putin call, the US Embassy in Kiev issued a security alert, warning of a potential escalation in Russian airstrikes. The State Department has urged Americans in Ukraine to identify shelters and prepare emergency supplies.
