Pentagon awaits Trump order to attack Iran
In remarks before the Senate Armed Services Committee on Wednesday, Hegseth stated, “Senator, as I've said, there's only one person … the American people elected him to make these decisions on their behalf, and if and when those decisions are made, the department is prepared to execute.”
Hegseth appeared alongside Gen. Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, to address a range of questions from lawmakers, including preparations for possible military strikes on Iran.
When asked by Sen. Tom Cotton whether the military’s role involves developing plans for all potential presidential decisions, Hegseth confirmed, “that is correct,” and emphasized, “Senator, our job is to have contingency plans.”
However, when pressed by Sen. Jeanne Shaheen on whether military action that could involve the US directly in conflict was under consideration, Hegseth chose not to provide specific details.
“Mr. Secretary, but my question for you is whether you have been asked actively to provide options for the president regarding a strike in the Middle East?” Shaheen asked.
Hegseth responded, “If I had or I had not, I wouldn't disclose that in this forum.”
He reiterated that his primary responsibility is to ensure that the president is equipped with a full range of military options, along with a clear understanding of the possible consequences of each. Hegseth added that his duty is to "make sure the president has options and is informed of what those options might be and what the ramifications of those options may be."
