Russian envoy unveils specifics of Trump meeting
(MENAFN) Russia’s newly appointed ambassador to the United States, Aleksandr Darchiev, revealed that he had a brief but “very constructive” meeting with President Donald Trump on Wednesday following the formal presentation of his credentials at the White House. This interaction comes shortly after Trump’s phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on June 4, marking their fourth conversation since Trump resumed office.
Darchiev told RIA Novosti that both leaders agreed on the importance of restoring bilateral relations in line with the instructions from Presidents Putin and Trump during their recent call. He pledged to do everything within his power to help return Russian-US ties to a more stable and sensible state.
The ambassador expressed optimism about a new opportunity to rebuild relations based on mutual trust and equality, emphasizing that as global powers, Russia and the US should aim for peaceful and non-confrontational coexistence.
He also noted ongoing discussions on business cooperation and the potential resumption of direct flights between the countries. Earlier, Darchiev described current restrictions on Russian diplomatic activity in the US as “absurd” and promised efforts to ease visa procedures.
Since 2022, under former President Joe Biden, the US largely cut diplomatic contacts with Russia due to the Ukraine conflict and imposed broad sanctions on Russian officials and businesses. Trump has criticized Biden’s approach, advocating for renewed diplomacy and offering to mediate peace between Moscow and Kiev. While Moscow has welcomed Trump’s softer stance, no major breakthroughs have been made yet. Trump has warned of possible new measures against Russia if a ceasefire is not achieved but has not supported the Senate’s pending sanctions bill.
