Moscow, Pyongyang consent enhancing education relations
As part of the deal, Russia will assist in opening a Russian language and general education center in Pyongyang, while a Korean language center will be created in Russia. The partnership also covers joint fairs, academic contests, exhibitions, and seminars. Both nations plan to increase the use of digital learning tools and encourage the teaching of Russian and Korean languages to schoolchildren.
Russian became a compulsory subject in North Korean schools starting in 2024 for students from the fourth grade onward. Over 100 North Korean teachers participated in a Russian language refresher course held at Blagoveshchensk State Pedagogical University in the same year.
The education forum attracted representatives from more than 30 countries. Russian President Vladimir Putin addressed the event via video, emphasizing the importance of enhancing global cooperation in education.
In recent years, Russia and North Korea have deepened their political, military, and economic ties. In 2023, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un met with Putin in Russia to discuss defense and trade relations. In June 2024, the two nations signed a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement, which includes provisions for military and other assistance if either country faces an invasion. Earlier this year, North Korean troops were reportedly deployed to Russia’s Kursk Region to help defend against a Ukrainian attack.
Additionally, Russia and North Korea have pursued joint ventures in energy and logistics and have coordinated efforts to lessen the effects of international sanctions.
