FSB arrests Ukrainian national charged with assassination plot in Russia
The man, a resident of the Novgorod Region in northwestern Russia, faces charges of attempted terrorist activity and illegal possession of explosives. Investigators are also considering additional charges, including sabotage and cooperation with a hostile state.
According to the FSB, the suspect is in his late 20s and admitted to making contact with Ukrainian intelligence officials in October 2023. Authorities accuse him of setting fire to two vehicles he believed belonged to Russian military personnel in September and December 2024.
In January, he was allegedly instructed to carry out surveillance and assassinate a specific individual using a homemade explosive device. The FSB identified the intended victim as a military veteran and public figure.
The agency claims the suspect collected components for the bomb from a hidden cache shortly before his arrest. A video released by the FSB shows various explosive materials, including a fuse and elements used in constructing improvised devices.
This incident comes amid a broader wave of alleged Ukrainian-linked plots in Russia. Just a day earlier, the FSB reported foiling another planned attack in the Krasnodar Region, where a suspect reportedly intended to use a 2.5kg explosive to target an energy facility.
Earlier this year, a Russian court sentenced another individual for attempting to poison military cadets with a toxin-laced cake at a graduation ceremony. That person, originally from Ukraine, had moved to Russia in 2018 and later became a naturalized citizen.
