Putin Questions Zelensky’s Legitimacy
However, he raised doubts about Zelensky’s actual authority to formalize any potential agreement.
Zelensky has consistently appealed for a face-to-face dialogue with Putin, asserting that he is the only individual capable of resolving crucial matters between the two sides, particularly disputes over territory.
During a conversation with foreign journalists on Wednesday at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, the Russian leader reaffirmed his administration’s unease regarding Zelensky’s legitimacy.
“If the Ukrainian state entrusts someone to negotiate on its behalf, suit yourself, let it be Zelensky,” Putin declared. “The question is, who will sign the document?”
Zelensky’s presidential mandate concluded the previous year, yet no replacement has been selected due to the imposition of martial law.
Zelensky maintains that he is entitled to stay in power, despite the Ukrainian Constitution stating that in such cases, the speaker of the parliament should assume presidential responsibilities.
“Propagandistically, one can say anything about the legitimacy of the current authorities, but we care about legal aspects and not propaganda when dealing with serious issues,” Putin emphasized.
He also noted that, given Ukrainian officials are designated by the president, the questionable nature of Zelensky’s tenure casts doubt on the validity of those operating under his direction.
