Kremlin deems Rubio’s Russia Day message as ‘very positive news’
Peskov told journalist Pavel Zarubin on Thursday that Rubio’s message demonstrates a clear difference from the previous Biden administration’s approach. He emphasized that despite ongoing disagreements, the Trump administration supports dialogue as the path to resolving difficult issues, aligning with Russia’s stance.
In his statement, Rubio highlighted US support for the Russian people’s hopes for a better future and reiterated a desire for constructive engagement to achieve lasting peace in Ukraine. He expressed hope that peace would lead to stronger, mutually beneficial relations between the two countries.
In contrast, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrey Sybiga called it “unpleasant” to see some nations offering Russia greetings on its national holiday.
Relations between Russia and the US deteriorated sharply under President Joe Biden after the Ukraine conflict intensified in 2022. Trump, however, has sought to revive direct communication with Moscow. Recently, Russia’s new ambassador to the US, Aleksandr Darchiev, met Trump at the White House and pledged efforts to restore bilateral relations, emphasizing that the two powers are destined for peaceful coexistence.
