Russia Hails Uganda as BRICS Partner
In discussions with Ugandan Foreign Minister Jeje Odongo, Lavrov stated that “We welcome Uganda as a BRICS partner country ... We look forward to active cooperation with our Ugandan friends in this new format,” highlighting Moscow’s anticipation of productive engagement with Kampala within the BRICS framework.
BRICS, originally founded in 2009 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, expanded in 2011 to include South Africa.
Over time, the coalition has grown significantly. In 2024, the group granted full membership to Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, the United Arab Emirates, and later, Indonesia.
By January 2025, Uganda and Nigeria had been recognized as partner nations, along with seven additional countries outside the African continent.
The two foreign ministers also reviewed various facets of bilateral relations.
They focused notably on sectors such as commerce, foreign direct investment, energy, food production, scientific collaboration, advanced technologies, and public health.
Both parties reiterated their dedication to enhancing political consultations, firmly rooted in established global law and guided by the foundational tenets of the United Nations Charter.
