UK Calls for “50-Day Drive” to Support Ukraine
This strategy comes in response to US President Donald Trump’s warning to impose secondary sanctions on Russia’s trade partners if the conflict remains unresolved within 50 days.
Healey is anticipated to deliver this call to action during a virtual meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group (UDCG) scheduled for Monday.
The minister is also likely to endorse Trump’s proposal and confirm the UK’s commitment to “bolster Ukraine’s immediate fight.”
He is expected to state, “The US has started the clock on a 50-day deadline for [Russian President Vladimir] Putin to agree to peace or face crippling economic sanctions… We need to step up in turn with a ‘50-day drive’ to arm Ukraine on the battlefield and force Putin to the negotiating table.”
Earlier this month, Trump set a 50-day ceasefire ultimatum for Russia, warning of “very severe” additional sanctions, including a 100% tariff on countries importing Russian oil.
Alongside these measures, he revealed plans for new arms deliveries to Ukraine, highlighting that the European Union would cover the expenses.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov commented that Trump’s statements “will be perceived by the Ukrainian side not as a signal toward peace, but as a signal to continue the war.”
Meanwhile, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov emphasized that Moscow will resist any ultimatums but remains open to diplomatic discussions.
