Thai Forces Accuse Cambodia of Border Truce Violation
(MENAFN) A ceasefire aimed at ending the deadly border clashes between Thailand and Cambodia, brokered on Monday, immediately faced challenges as Thai forces accused Cambodian troops of breaching the truce overnight.
The longstanding territorial dispute between these Southeast Asian neighbors, stemming from colonial-era border delineations, reignited into violence last week following rising tensions since late May. The ceasefire, brokered with crucial mediation by Malaysia, sought to halt the escalating conflict.
Early Tuesday, Thailand’s military reported that its forces had honored the ceasefire terms, while accusing Cambodian troops of engaging in “disturbances and weapon attacks in multiple areas.” Thai Army spokesperson Winthai Suvaree condemned the violations, stating Thai forces responded with “appropriate retaliatory measures under the legitimate right of self-defense.”
Cambodia rejected the allegations outright. Military spokesperson Maly Socheata insisted that Cambodian soldiers “have strictly adhered to the orders and agreements under the ceasefire.”
Following the ceasefire framework, commanders from both nations convened Tuesday morning, although no information regarding the discussions has been disclosed. A joint border committee is scheduled to meet next week to further address the dispute.
Both Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand’s acting prime minister, Phumtham Wechayachai, affirmed their dedication to resolving the crisis peacefully.
The clashes have resulted in at least 37 deaths, including civilians, and forced hundreds of thousands from border communities to flee. At the ceasefire announcement in Putrajaya, both leaders expressed gratitude to US President Donald Trump and China for facilitating the agreement.
Trump revealed that he leveraged trade talks with Thailand and Cambodia to encourage a de-escalation of hostilities.
