Taiwan’s opposition lawmakers, mayor survive ‘recall vote’ attempt
An effort to remove Hsinchu Mayor Ann Kao also failed. Kao, who had been suspended and previously affiliated with the TPP, was facing backlash following a corruption conviction.
Polls opened at 8 a.m. and closed at 4 p.m. local time, with large voter turnouts observed at many polling stations across the island.
Many analysts viewed the recall initiative as an attempt by the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to regain influence in the legislature. Most lawmakers facing recall represent northern Taiwan—an area with strong KMT backing—including prominent figures from Taipei and New Taipei like Hung Meng-kai, who led the vote count in the 2024 legislative elections.
The DPP has denied leading the recall campaigns, but party leader and current Taiwanese president William Lai Ching-te has publicly supported some efforts to unseat opposition lawmakers. A second round of recall votes is scheduled for August 23, potentially opening the door for by-elections that could help the DPP rebuild its lost legislative majority.
The recalls are being closely monitored, especially as the DPP has struggled to push through its policy agenda since losing its legislative majority last year. If a recall had succeeded, it would have triggered a by-election within three months in that district.
