Russia Cautions Against Early Optimism on US Ties
He emphasized that Russia has recently abandoned a voluntary freeze on the placement of intermediate-range missiles.
This decision, he noted, aims to "cool hotheads in certain NATO capitals," indicating growing unease over Western military actions.
The original 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty between the US and Russia fell apart in 2019.
Although the agreement had officially collapsed, Moscow had chosen to continue adhering to its terms unilaterally.
The breakdown came during President Donald Trump’s first term, when the United States withdrew from the treaty, alleging Russian breaches—an accusation Moscow has consistently refuted.
In a Sunday interview with a television network, Ryabkov remarked that “some sprouts of common sense are appearing in the dialogue with the US,” something he said had been sorely missing in the past few months and even years.
His comment suggests cautious optimism but falls short of declaring a breakthrough.
Nonetheless, Ryabkov underscored that labeling the current situation as a “détente” would be entirely inappropriate.
He reiterated that Russia's decision to end the missile moratorium was driven by necessity.
In his words, Moscow had little alternative given the behavior of “the Americans and their allies, especially the European warmongers,” implying that recent Western actions had left Russia with no room for compromise.
