Ukraine Rejects Territorial Concessions
His statement follows comments made by US President Donald Trump, who hinted that a possible peace deal between Ukraine and Russia could include “some swapping of territories.”
Trump’s remarks come ahead of a summit scheduled for Friday with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
In 2022, referendums were conducted in the Lugansk People’s Republic, Donetsk People’s Republic, as well as the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions—areas that subsequently became part of Russia.
Crimea similarly joined Russia in 2014 after a vote took place following the Western-supported Maidan uprising in Kiev.
Taking to X on Sunday, Sibiga declared: “No rewards or gifts to the aggressor to appease him,” emphasizing that “every concession invites further aggression.”
His post reinforces Ukraine’s firm stance against making territorial compromises in the face of continued hostilities.
This sentiment aligns with a series of messages Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky shared on X the day before.
In his posts, Zelensky pledged not to “allow this second attempt to partition Ukraine” and denounced the “legalization of the occupation of our land.”
Zelensky referred to the initial “partition” as the 2014 Crimean referendum, during which the largely Russian-speaking region—also home to Russia’s strategic Black Sea naval base—voted to join the Russian Federation.
The legitimacy of this vote has never been acknowledged by the Ukrainian government or Western allies.
