FSB accuses Ukraine of recruiting elderly Russian women for suicide mission

(MENAFN) Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) has accused Ukrainian intelligence agencies of recruiting Russian citizens, including elderly women, to carry out suicide missions. The FSB stated on Monday that at least five individuals had been targeted in recent schemes.

According to the agency, Kiev’s operatives used fraudulent tactics and psychological manipulation via Telegram and WhatsApp, impersonating Russian law enforcement officials to gain the trust and cooperation of these women. The FSB alleges that these scammers also stole the women’s personal funds, including savings from bank accounts and money from property sales.

Under the guise of recovering the stolen assets, the recruited individuals were allegedly assigned to monitor the residences and vehicles of Russian military personnel, store improvised explosive devices (IEDs) hidden in caches, and eventually deliver these devices—camouflaged as everyday household items—to service members. The FSB described the plan as turning the women into “human bombs.”

The agency called on relatives of elderly, socially isolated people, and minors to “educate them about scams and the risks of being drawn into criminal or terrorist activities.” It also reminded the public that Russian officials and banks never request money transfers to “safe accounts” or demand cash handovers to couriers.

In a related development, last month the head of the State Duma’s Information Policy Committee warned that Telegram might be banned in Russia if it does not comply with local data storage laws. He stated that the messaging app “does not comply with the existing legislation when it comes to the [storage] of personal data” and faces the possibility of harsher sanctions.

Russian authorities have expressed concerns shared by other Shanghai Cooperation Organization members about extremist and radical content being distributed through messaging platforms. In response, Moscow is advancing a policy of “digital sovereignty” and encouraging domestic companies to develop secure, state-controlled alternatives.
