Protests Erupt in Greece Condemning Israel
These large-scale rallies were sparked by a unified call from the Greek branches of Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) and the Global March to Gaza movement, in addition to the Palestinian community residing in Greece.
Demonstrations were reported in more than 100 cities and towns, including the capital Athens, the adjacent port of Piraeus, Patra on the western coast, the northern hub of Thessaloniki, and popular islands like Mykonos, Santorini, Amorgos, Chios, Tinos, and Syros.
Protesters waved Palestinian flags and held placards showing solidarity with Palestine while strongly opposing what they called Israel’s genocidal tactics in Gaza.
Chants echoed through the streets with messages such as “Victory to the resistance,” “Freedom to Palestine,” and “End genocide in Palestine,” among others.
The Israeli government continues to draw fierce international criticism for its military offensive in Gaza, which has reportedly claimed the lives of over 61,400 individuals since October 2023.
The campaign has ravaged the region, obstructed vital humanitarian supplies, and brought Gaza to the brink of famine.
In a significant development last November, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants targeting Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, accusing them of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Furthermore, Israel is currently facing a genocide trial at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) concerning its military operations in the embattled territory.
