Kazakh President Reaffirms Commitment to Ukraine Peace

(MENAFN) Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev reaffirmed his nation’s “unconditional” commitment to securing lasting peace in Ukraine during a Sunday phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

According to a Telegram statement from Kazakhstan’s presidential press service Akorda, Tokayev emphasized the Kazakh people's deep respect for “the Ukrainian people, their history, culture, and language.” He reiterated Kazakhstan’s firm interest in achieving peace grounded in international law principles.

The statement noted that Tokayev emphasized the need to address the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict in a “balanced and rational manner,” while prioritizing the preservation and protection of Ukrainian statehood.

“He (Tokayev) believes that all parties should act in accordance with the ancient wisdom: ‘A bad peace is better than a good quarrel’,” the statement read, noting the president’s recognition of the “territorial problem” as “the most difficult in international relations, often becoming an insurmountable obstacle to reaching an agreement on peace and even a truce.”

Kazakhstan also stressed that “the main priority is the preservation of Ukrainian statehood based on unshakable international guarantees of Ukraine's security,” and affirmed its intention to maintain active cooperation with Ukraine across multiple sectors.

Responding on X, Zelenskyy characterized the call as “good and substantive” and thanked Kazakhstan for its support of the Ukrainian people, along with their independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

“I noted that it is extremely dangerous for every nation if this or that independent state is regarded simply as ‘territory’ and attempts are made to partition it. History has shown many times: if such injustice is allowed against one state, it does not end there,” Zelenskyy added.

The phone call came amid renewed discussions of territorial compromises in the conflict. On Friday, US President Donald Trump proposed “some swapping of territories” between Russia and Ukraine as part of a potential ceasefire, ahead of a scheduled Trump-Putin summit in Alaska on August 15.

In a video address following Trump’s remarks, Zelenskyy firmly rejected territorial concessions, stating: “The answer to the Ukrainian territorial question already is in the Constitution of Ukraine. No one will deviate from this – and no one will be able to. Ukrainians will not gift their land to the occupier.”
