U.S., S. Korea Intensify Search Efforts for Korean War Remains
This agreement emerged from the annual discussions held last week in Washington between South Korea’s Defense Ministry Agency for KIA (Killed in Action) Recovery and Identification and the US Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA).
Both parties resolved to prioritize joint efforts in searching for, excavating, and forensically identifying the remains of soldiers from both nations. Additionally, the timing for returning several sets of remains was addressed, including plans for the repatriation of seven US and three South Korean remains next year.
In a significant development, the US and South Korea agreed to transfer the remains of four Turkish soldiers, currently under DPAA custody, back to South Korea later this month. These will be honored with interment at the UN Memorial Cemetery in Korea, located in Busan, in November.
Since 2011, these annual meetings have served as a vital platform for enhancing cooperation in recovery missions targeting the fallen of the 1950-53 Korean War, underscoring ongoing efforts to bring closure to families and nations alike.
