Seven laborers pass away due to landslide in Pakistan

(MENAFN) Reports say a landslide struck early Monday in northern Pakistan, killing at least seven laborers who were working to restore a damaged water system.

Three additional workers were injured while repairing a water channel in Danyor city, Gilgit-Baltistan, which had been damaged by recent flooding, according to local authorities. Rescuers reportedly spent hours removing the victims from the debris.

The mountainous Gilgit-Baltistan region—home to five peaks exceeding 8,000 meters—has faced ongoing heavy rains and flooding since late June. These disasters have claimed 17 lives, while around a dozen tourists, including a local TV anchor, remain missing.

Just a day before the landslide, a glacial lake outburst flood destroyed part of the Karakoram Highway, which links Pakistan to China, and also swept away several homes and government buildings.

Nationwide, the National Disaster Management Authority has recorded over 300 deaths and more than 700 injuries from rain-related incidents since June 26.

While seasonal monsoon rains regularly cause severe damage in Pakistan, experts note that climate change effects—such as accelerated glacier melt—have intensified and made these events less predictable in recent years.
