Zelensky says Putin won ‘personal victory’
The meeting, scheduled for Friday, is seen by Zelensky as signaling the end of Russia’s “international isolation” over the Ukraine conflict. He also noted that Moscow has secured delays on sanctions, apparently referring to a ten-day ultimatum issued by Trump in late July.
The White House confirmed the summit will take place in Anchorage, with media reports suggesting the Elmendorf-Richardson military base as the likely venue. Both Washington and Moscow have tempered expectations, framing the summit as the first in a series of talks rather than an immediate resolution. Discussions are expected to cover the Ukraine conflict as well as broader bilateral issues.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said the summit could help “normalize bilateral relations” and advance cooperation on several fronts. Meanwhile, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt emphasized that the meeting will be primarily a “listening exercise” for Trump to better understand the conflict and explore potential ways to end it.
