UN Rolls Out Dual AI Bodies to Boost International Tech Governance

(MENAFN) In a decisive move to bolster global oversight of artificial intelligence, the UN General Assembly on Tuesday approved the creation of two new mechanisms aimed at strengthening international collaboration on AI governance, a development hailed by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, according to spokesperson Stephan Dujarric.

Speaking at the daily press briefing, Dujarric announced the formation of the United Nations Independent International Scientific Panel on AI and the Global Dialogue on AI Governance, describing them as critical steps toward ensuring AI is both beneficial and responsibly managed.

“This pathbreaking milestone underlines Member States’ commitment to build on the Global Digital Compact adopted as part of the Pact for the Future in September 2024,” he stated.

The newly established Global Dialogue on AI Governance will act as an inclusive platform for countries and stakeholders to tackle urgent AI-related issues, while the Scientific Panel on AI will function as a conduit between advanced AI research and policy development.

Dujarric highlighted the panel’s crucial function in supporting well-informed international decision-making on AI by providing thorough and impartial scientific evaluations designed to foresee emerging risks associated with the fast-developing technology.

The UN Secretary-General is expected to issue a public call for nominations to the panel in the coming weeks. Its findings will be presented annually at sessions of the Global Dialogue on AI Governance, scheduled for July 2026 in Geneva and 2027 in New York.

The secretary-general “calls on all stakeholders to support this historic initiative and contribute to building a future where artificial intelligence serves the common good of all humanity,” Dujarric added.

The UN General Assembly formally adopted the resolutions establishing the two entities in an early Tuesday vote.
