Nigerian leader confirms brigadier general got killed by terrorist group
The president made the announcement in a statement released by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, on Tuesday, offering condolences to the military and the families of the soldiers killed in the attack.
Local media had earlier reported that Uba was kidnapped after ISWAP ambushed his team, which included members of the Civilian Joint Task Force, on Friday night in the northern Chad region. Initially, the Nigerian army denied that the general had been captured, claiming he was safe and that their forces had successfully repelled the ambush.
However, ISWAP later announced Uba’s capture and killing, sharing photos as evidence of the act. President Tinubu confirmed the tragic news, expressing that he is “depressed with the tragic death of our soldiers and officers on active duty.”
This marks the first known instance of a high-ranking Nigerian military officer being captured, interrogated, and murdered by a terrorist group.
In a related development, Tinubu has directed security agencies to swiftly act to recover kidnapped schoolgirls from Kebbi State, amid ongoing concerns over terrorist activity in the region.
