Yemen’s Presidential Council Pledges Probe into Aden Violence
The announcement came during a council meeting in Riyadh on Sunday, attended via video link by Prime Minister Shaya al-Zindani, according to official reports. The session reviewed “developments in Aden in light of the recent events the city witnessed, including attempts to attack state institutions, disrupt their work, and use the street as a tool of pressure to achieve illegitimate political objectives,” the council said.
Earlier in the week, Aden’s security committee reported that armed groups had gathered near the Maasheq Presidential Palace, attempting to storm the facility while clashing with security forces. The council confirmed that casualties occurred during the unrest and condemned the violence as a direct attempt to target government institutions, which coincided with the first meeting of Yemen’s newly formed government in the city.
The leadership emphasized its determination to “respond firmly to any attempt to disrupt its national institutions, and to opening a comprehensive investigation into these events and holding accountable anyone proven to be involved in inciting or financing them.”
The council also expressed gratitude to Saudi Arabia for hosting a conference addressing Yemen’s southern region, describing it as “an unprecedented level in addressing the southern issue, as a just cause with historical and social dimensions that requires a fair solution within the framework of the state and its guaranteeing references.” Officials warned against “squandering this historic opportunity under the pressure of slogans or narrow calculations” and called for the protection of recent security, service, and economic gains.
On February 6, the council announced a new government led by Zindani, who also oversees foreign affairs. The formation followed weeks of Riyadh-based consultations aimed at easing tensions between the internationally recognized government and the Southern Transitional Council, establishing a consensual framework for the next phase of governance.
