Indonesia Says Ready to Mediate Iran-U.S.- Israel Conflict

(MENAFN) Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono extended a formal offer Tuesday to serve as a mediating force in the intensifying conflict between Iran, the United States, and Israel — signaling that diplomatic efforts to contain the crisis are beginning to take shape even as casualties mount.

Sugiono reached out directly to Iranian counterpart Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi by phone, positioning the Southeast Asian nation as a neutral broker capable of bridging the widening divide between warring parties.

"Indonesia stands ready to play a constructive role in advancing peace, including offering our willingness to facilitate dialogue or mediation, with the common objective of preventing further escalation and stopping the unnecessary loss of innocent lives," Sugiono said in a statement posted to X.

The minister called on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and move urgently toward de-escalation, warning that the window for diplomacy was narrowing.

"Respect for international law and the UN Charter must be upheld. Dialogue and diplomacy are the only viable path to regional stability," he added.

The Indonesian overture came as regional powers scrambled to respond to a conflict that has expanded with alarming speed. On Monday, Araghchi separately held talks with Afghanistan's acting Foreign Minister Mullah Amir Khan Muttaqi to assess the deteriorating regional picture. A readout from Afghanistan's Foreign Ministry indicated that Muttaqi expressed "deep concern" over the situation, condemned U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran, and offered condolences over what he described as the "tragic targeting" of Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

The human cost of the conflict is escalating sharply. Since joint U.S.-Israeli strikes commenced Saturday, several senior Iranian officials have been reported killed. Tehran has retaliated with drone and missile salvos against U.S.-linked installations across Gulf nations, leaving six American service members dead and several others critically wounded.

The Iranian Red Crescent reported Tuesday that the cumulative death toll from U.S. and Israeli airstrikes since the weekend has climbed to 555 — a figure that threatens to harden positions on all sides and complicate any prospective diplomatic intervention.
