U.S. Announces Death of Six Service Members in Iran Strikes

(MENAFN) The U.S. Central Command announced Monday that two more American service members have been confirmed dead in the ongoing conflict with Iran, raising the total to six.

"As of 4 pm ET, March 2, six U.S. service members have been killed in action. U.S. forces recently recovered the remains of two previously unaccounted for service members from a facility that was struck during Iran's initial attacks in the region," the command said in a post on X.

Earlier in the day, the command reported that U.S. forces had sunk 11 Iranian naval vessels operating in the Gulf of Oman.

The United States, alongside Israel, launched extensive airstrikes against Iran on Saturday morning. Tehran confirmed on Sunday that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in the bombardment.

On Monday, President Donald Trump declared that the military campaign against Iran has "capability to go far longer" than four to five weeks.

The operation has triggered sharp criticism from Democratic lawmakers, who argue the strikes lacked congressional authorization and were not justified by an imminent threat.

House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries voiced his opposition in a post on X Sunday, writing that he was "heartbroken by the loss of life of multiple service members in the Middle East." He added: "No more American heroes need to die because of a reckless decision to go to war. Congress must act this week to restrain this President."

The escalating conflict has intensified political divisions in Washington, as the toll on U.S. forces continues to rise.
