Pope Leo Appeals for Peace as Hatred, Deaths Rise
“I wish to renew the appeal for a ceasefire, to work for peace, but not with weapons -- with dialogue,” he told journalists in Castel Gandolfo, Italy.
The pontiff highlighted that “hatred is increasing” and that violence is intensifying, noting that over a million people remain isolated and many have lost their lives.
“We want to pray for peace, but I urge all authorities to truly work through dialogue to resolve problems,” he added.
In a separate Angelus address on Sunday, the pope expressed “dismay” over the situation in the Middle East and other conflict-affected regions.
“We cannot remain silent in the face of the suffering of so many defenseless people who are victims of these conflicts,” he said, describing the toll of war as “a scandal for the entire human family.”
He also called for continued prayer that hostilities may end and that paths to peace could open through genuine dialogue and respect for human dignity.
The region has been destabilized since a US-Israeli joint offensive on Iran began on February 28, resulting in over 1,300 deaths, including then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Tehran has responded with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, as well as Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states hosting US military assets, causing casualties, infrastructure damage, and disruptions to global markets and aviation.
