Israel Prolongs Military Operation in West Bank Refugee Camps
Tulkarem Governor Abdullah Kamil said the Israeli army informed residents that its operations in both camps would extend through May 31. “The decision reflects a clear determination to continue this crime,” Kamil stated, referring to ongoing forced evictions, home demolitions, and the destruction of essential infrastructure. He added that the extension would further worsen humanitarian conditions for local residents.
The offensive in Tulkarem and Nur Shams began on January 27, six days after military action commenced in the Jenin refugee camp. The Palestinian Liberation Organization’s Department of Refugee Affairs condemned the extension, describing it as “a new episode in the ongoing aggression” against Palestinian camps.
Officials said the actions align with a broader Israeli policy of forced displacement and systematic destruction targeting Palestinian refugee populations. They noted that Tulkarem and Nur Shams, like other refugee camps, are seen as enduring symbols of the Nakba, making them focal points in Israel’s wider strategy.
