Central African Republic President Touadera Takes Oath for Third Term
The ceremony, broadcast live from a sports stadium in the capital Bangui, drew a notable roster of regional heads of state, including Gabonese President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, Burundi President Evariste Ndayishimiye — who also holds the chairpersonship of the African Union — and Comoros President Azali Assoumani.
Touadera secured his return to power in December 2025 with a landslide 77.9% of the vote, a result formally validated by the country's Constitutional Council.
The 68-year-old leader has dominated CAR politics for nearly a decade, first winning the presidency in 2016 before securing re-election in 2020 with 53.16% of the vote in the opening round. His path to a third term was cleared by a 2023 constitutional referendum that abolished term limits and extended the presidential mandate from five to seven years.
Yet the political milestone belies a deeply fragile reality on the ground. Despite a peace agreement brokered in 2019, the Central African Republic remains mired in persistent insecurity. The United Nations reports that more than two million people are currently in need of humanitarian assistance, while nearly one million have been uprooted — displaced both within the country's borders and beyond.
