Israel Passes 2026 State Budget Amid Regional Tensions

(MENAFN) Israel’s parliament passed the 2026 state budget early Monday, including an unprecedented allocation for defense, sparking criticism from opposition leaders, as stated by reports.

The budget cleared its final vote in the Knesset by 62 to 55, narrowly meeting the legal deadline on Tuesday that, if missed, would have triggered early elections.

Totaling 850.6 billion shekels ($271 billion), the budget dedicates 143 billion shekels ($45.8 billion) to the Defense Ministry of Israel—the largest defense spending in the country’s history, according to local media.

Opposition leader Yair Lapid condemned the measure on social media, calling it “the greatest theft in the history of the state.” He criticized the plan, saying: “They took the money from reservists and gave it to draft dodgers. They robbed working people and gave it to the corrupt.”

The budget comes amid the ongoing US-Israeli conflict with Iran, which has intensified regional tensions and contributed to the surge in Israel’s military expenditure.
