Iran Confirms No Direct Talks with US, Contacts Limited to Intermediaries
Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei clarified, “First, we have not conducted any direct negotiations with the United States so far. What has been discussed were messages we received through mediators indicating the United States’ desire to negotiate,” rejecting suggestions of direct diplomatic engagement.
He also cast doubt on Washington’s claims about pursuing diplomacy to end the conflict, saying, “I do not know how many people in the United States take American diplomacy claims seriously. Our mission is clear, unlike the other side, which constantly changes its position.”
Baqaei stressed that Iran has remained consistent in its approach from the beginning and understands the principles guiding its policy, while describing proposals relayed to Tehran as “excessive and unrealistic.”
The spokesperson further noted that meetings held in Pakistan were organized “independently” and that Iran did not take part in them.
He added, “It is good that countries in the region are interested in ending the war, but they must clearly understand who started it,” pointing to broader regional involvement in mediation efforts.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s foreign minister said the country would be “honored” to facilitate talks between Washington and Tehran as part of ongoing diplomatic initiatives, which have included multilateral meetings.
On Sunday, U.S. President Donald Trump voiced support for diplomatic channels, with countries such as Pakistan, Türkiye, and Egypt acting as intermediaries in indirect communications between the two sides.
