Russia Claims EU Gearing Up for War Against Moscow
Vasily Nebenzya, Russia's envoy to the UN Security Council, pointed to a nearly 60% surge in EU defense spending as evidence of the bloc's military buildup, aimed at bolstering Europe's defense capability by 2030. He said expenditure hit €381 billion ($488 billion) last year alone — positioning the EU as the world's second-largest defense spender behind only the United States.
"These large-scale military preparations leave no doubt that Europe is seriously preparing for a major war against Russia," Nebenzya said.
He warned that the EU is "playing with fire," cautioning that Moscow would be compelled to respond in kind to what he described as "anti-Russian attacks," invoking a pointed historical warning: "And none of the conquerors who came to us 'with the sword'—and there are countless of them—has ever left Russia unharmed."
Nebenzya further accused the EU of actively fueling the conflict in Ukraine, alleging that Europe has ramped up arms and military equipment deliveries to Kyiv in breach of its own export control standards and international commitments.
"All of the European Union's efforts are currently focused on inflicting a 'strategic defeat' on Russia," he charged, adding that EU officials "reject the very idea of a diplomatic settlement and openly promote a war narrative, while simultaneously increasing sanctions pressure on Russia."
Nebenzya dismissed those sanctions as counterproductive, arguing they have not only failed to weaken Moscow but have inflicted economic self-harm on European nations — fueling inflation and eroding real incomes across the continent.
