Smotrich Calls for Apology from Merz Over West Bank Comments
Speaking on the US social media platform X late Monday, Smotrich strongly criticized the German leader and linked his remarks to Holocaust remembrance. “On the eve of Holocaust Remembrance Day, the German Chancellor should bow his head and apologize a thousand times on behalf of Germany, rather than daring to preach morality to us on how to conduct ourselves against the Nazis of our generation,” he said, according to reports.
He further argued that Israel would reject what he described as European interference, saying it will “not accept instructions from hypocritical leaders in Europe, a continent that is once again losing its conscience and its ability to distinguish between good and evil,” according to the same statements.
Smotrich also insisted that “The days when Germans dictated to Jews” were over.
Reinforcing his ideological position, he added: “Our return to the Land of Israel -- our biblical and historical homeland -- is the answer to anyone who tried or tries to destroy us, and we do not apologize for it for a single moment,” as stated in his remarks.
His comments followed concerns expressed by Merz earlier in the week, when he warned about developments in the Palestinian territories and stressed that a “de facto partial annexation of the West Bank” should be prevented, according to reports.
