Iran's Qalibaf Defends Pope Leo XIV Following Trump’s Remarks
"Honoring Pope Leo's fearless stand! 'I have no fear' echoes as he condemns the war crimes of Israel and the US. This slogan lights the path for all who refuse to stay silent on the killing of innocents," Qalibaf said in a post on X, the US social media platform.
He added that the pope's leadership "inspires millions" and thanked him "for this light."
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian also weighed in, condemning what he described as insults directed at Pope Leo, stating that disrespect toward the pontiff and Jesus is categorically unacceptable. Writing on X and speaking "on behalf of the great nation of Iran," Pezeshkian said the desecration of "Jesus, the prophet of peace and brotherhood," is not acceptable to any free person.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry added its voice to the chorus of criticism against Trump, with spokesperson Esmail Baghaei posting on X: "In an era when the thunder of bombs and the clamor of warlords and aggressors weigh heavily on the world's conscience, the words of Pope Leo XIV echo the profound call of the Gospel: 'Blessed are the peacemakers.'"
Baghaei further condemned the attacks on the pope as "not only unchristian," but also "a blatant assault on responsible advocacy for peace, justice and humanity."
The wave of Iranian solidarity followed a sharp public broadside by Trump against Pope Leo, in which the US president branded the pontiff "weak on crime" and "terrible for foreign policy," while casting doubt on the circumstances of his election. Trump also criticized the pope's positions on international conflicts, including the war involving Iran, and insinuated that his leadership of the Catholic Church was politically driven. The US president separately shared an AI-generated image on Truth Social depicting himself as Jesus.
Pope Leo, unbowed, responded by declaring he harbors no fear of the Trump administration and will continue denouncing war — insisting his stance is grounded in religious conviction, not political calculation.
