OpenAI CEO Attack Suspect Faces Charges of Attempted Murder, Arson
FBI Director Kash Patel disclosed via the US social media platform X that agents apprehended Daniel Moreno-Gama on Friday following a raid on his Texas home.
At a Monday press conference, Matt Cobo, the FBI's acting special agent for San Francisco, left little ambiguity about the gravity of the incident, stating the attack was "planned, targeted and extremely serious."
Federal prosecutors with the Department of Justice further alleged that Moreno-Gama was found in possession of a self-authored three-part document expressing opposition to artificial intelligence, according to media. He now confronts charges at both the state and federal levels.
San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins delivered the sharpest condemnation, drawing a direct line between the suspect's actions and a clear intent to kill. "We interpret this behavior for just what it is: An attempt on Mr. Altman's life and an extreme danger to those around him and those who work for his company," Jenkins said at Monday's press conference.
The arrest signals a growing law enforcement focus on threats targeting prominent figures within the technology and artificial intelligence sectors.
