Bosnia High Representative to Step Down in June

(MENAFN) The High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina announced on Tuesday that he will step down from his position in June, delivering what he described as his final report to the United Nations Security Council.

Christian Schmidt said he had made a personal decision to end his mandate under the framework of the Dayton Peace Agreement and relevant UN Security Council resolutions, noting that his appointment had been confirmed by a decision of the Steering Board of the Peace Implementation Council in 2021.

He added that the process of selecting a successor is already underway.

Schmidt’s announcement comes as Bosnia and Herzegovina continues to face what he described as a growing crisis in governance and institutional effectiveness. He warned that the country is at a critical crossroads, with one path leading toward stronger institutions, economic recovery, rule of law, and democratic consolidation, while the other could result in stagnation driven by political obstruction and weakening state structures.

While he said the overall security situation remains stable, Schmidt cautioned that “potentially disruptive tensions remain an issue of concern,” highlighting ongoing political fragility in the country.
