German Industry Loses Nearly Half a Million Jobs Over Seven Years
The number of industrial jobs covered by social security contributions dropped by 496,000, representing a 7.1% decline over the seven-year period, the study by the institute’s Dresden branch found.
In contrast, the services sector created more than 2.2 million jobs, with much of the growth recorded in health care, social services and public administration.
The automotive industry and its suppliers experienced a substantial reduction in employment, losing 123,500 jobs, equivalent to 13% of their workforce. Metal products manufacturers also recorded significant cuts, eliminating 115,600 positions, while mechanical engineering companies reduced their workforce by 64,500.
Together, these three industrial sectors accounted for approximately 60% of the total job losses recorded across Germany’s industry during the period.
The figures highlight the contrasting employment trends in Germany’s economy, with traditional industrial sectors facing workforce reductions while services continued to expand.
